In 2021 the Canadian government named September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, in direct response to one of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action. The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) is commemorating this year’s day with a series of events throughout next week.
Virtual sessions with the RAIC Indigenous Task Force (ITF) and Truth and Reconciliation Task Force, as well as Indigenous education provider NVision, will provide educational and personal insights into the atrocities that took place in Canada’s Residential Schools, and the lasting, inter-generational trauma for First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities. For more information on the sessions and how to participate, visit the RAIC website.
As part of its five-year Strategic Plan, the OAA has committed to ongoing Reconciliation and partnering with Indigenous communities to collaborate on meaningful projects. It encourages its members and practices to pause for reflection on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and staff will be participating in voluntary virtual discussions. The OAA Website offers information related to Truth and Reconciliation as well as Indigenous architecture, focusing on support and education.
